Job description

About Ohmium

Established in 2019, Ohmium is dedicated to advancing green hydrogen technologies to foster a sustainable future. Headquartered in the US with R&D centers in San Francisco Bay, Chennai, and Bangalore, the company operates India's pioneering Gigafactory in Bangalore for manufacturing PEM electrolyzers. Ohmium focuses on developing modular, safe, and scalable emissions-free hydrogen solutions through its patented PEM electrolyzer technology. The company maintains strategic R&D collaborations with top institutions including IIT India, CECRI India, Politecnico di Torino University, Italy, and Comillas Pontifical University, Spain.

Role Overview

The role involves developing and executing process and mechanical basic engineering work for hydrogen production facilities and downstream systems. Key tasks include generating essential engineering deliverables such as design basis documents, P&IDs, flow diagrams, equipment datasheets, and scope documents. The engineer will design preliminary equipment sizing, create and maintain Excel-based engineering models, perform fundamental calculations for various process conditions, and support supplier information gathering through RFQs and cost estimations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create foundational engineering documentation and data for hydrogen production systems including operating cases, flow diagrams, balance calculations, and equipment lists.
  • Develop and manage audit-compliant, Excel-based engineering tools for calculations with clear assumptions and controls.
  • Perform primary calculations relating to gas flow, compressor power, pressure, cooling, utility usage, and other process requirements.
  • Establish process parameters such as design pressures, temperatures, operating modes, utilities, and control interfaces.
  • Determine preliminary equipment specifications, sizing, and supplier quotation preparation essentials.
  • Critically analyze inputs from various engineering teams, EPC contractors, and vendors to ensure sound design integrity.
  • Identify when advanced simulations, detailed stress analyses, safety reviews, or third-party validations are necessary.
  • Assess process and mechanical integration risks related to operating conditions, materials, drainage, control strategies, and abnormal scenarios.
  • Specify technical and interface requirements for compression packages and downstream hydrogen systems including storage, cooling, purification, and dispensing.
  • Support integration of hydrogen delivery applications such as loading bays, refueling stations, export systems, and pipeline interfaces.
  • Review mechanical package layouts, utility demands, connection requirements, vendor documentation, and installation constraints.
  • Evaluate material selection considering hydrogen compatibility, corrosion, embrittlement, cleanliness, and project requirements.
  • Undertake technical optimization and value engineering efforts.
  • Identify and prequalify suitable suppliers and prepare detailed RFQ packages including datasheets.
  • Manage supplier interactions, technical clarifications, and quotation evaluations to support budget estimates and cost breakdowns.
  • Create and maintain structured cost databases and preliminary bills of materials.
  • Identify cost-saving alternatives and supplier strategies.
  • Assist EPC partners during project phases ensuring alignment with design basis and resolving technical queries.
  • Participate in safety and design reviews including HAZID, HAZOP, and constructability sessions.
  • Provide on-site support during construction phases including installation readiness, interface coordination, and commissioning preparations.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Process, Mechanical Engineering or closely related field; postgraduate qualification is advantageous.
  • 8 to 12+ years of relevant experience in process or mechanical package engineering related to hydrogen, industrial gases, petrochemical, or similar industries.
  • Minimum of 3 years of practical experience in basic engineering, equipment sizing, cost estimation, supplier RFQs, and techno-commercial evaluations.
  • Hands-on experience with equipment such as compressors, pressure vessels, dryers, cooling systems, high-pressure piping, and hydrogen dispensing systems.
  • Proven ability to prepare detailed engineering calculations, datasheets, RFQs, quotations, budget estimates, BOMs, and scope documentation.
  • Experience working within EPC contractors, consultancy firms, or hydrogen technology providers is highly preferred.
