Job description

Role Overview

The Specialist in the Poison Control Center operates with limited supervision and is responsible for providing assessment support, case management guidance, and follow-up care for emergency and informational calls received from members of the public and healthcare professionals. The role also contributes to the wider clinical toxicology service through clinical input, education, research, and service improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver clear verbal and written clinical guidance and case management advice for emergency calls, informational enquiries, and clinical toxicology consultations.
  • Collect and evaluate all relevant caller details to judge the severity of the poisoning event and understand the caller’s knowledge level and decision-making capacity.
  • Independently decide whether the case can be managed by the poison control center or whether the patient should be referred to a healthcare provider.
  • Provide concise, practical, and appropriately tailored recommendations that match the caller’s level of understanding.
  • Carry out follow-up calls to monitor patient condition and update management advice when needed.
  • Record every call and consultation accurately in the poison control center’s electronic medical record system.
  • For consultative cases, provide telephone support and bedside recommendations where required, and undertake rounds and follow-up under the supervision of the medical toxicologist.
  • Teach and supervise PharmD students, pharmacy residents, emergency medicine residents, and other trainees completing toxicology rotations.
  • Prepare and present lectures on poisoning-related topics for internal and external audiences.
  • Contribute to educational programs run by the poison control center and the Section of Clinical Toxicology.
  • Review case details, search medical literature, and consult appropriate resources to support triage decisions, treatment recommendations, and protocol development.
  • Create and share reference material on new medicines, including their availability and toxicological profile.
  • Coordinate with on-call personnel on medical and toxicology-related matters.
  • Prepare for and attend conference meetings, in-service sessions, and staff meetings.
  • Support the orientation, training, instruction, and supervision of new staff and students when needed.
  • Take part in ongoing clinical research initiatives.
  • Contribute to outreach and public education activities.
  • Work with the Manager and Director to identify operational and clinical enhancements that strengthen poison center services and the clinical toxicology function.

Requirements

  • Must hold a PharmD degree and have a background as a clinical pharmacist.
  • Should have 5 to 7 years of relevant experience in an accredited Poison Control Center or in an acute care or critical care inpatient environment.
  • Demonstrated achievement in one or more of the following areas is required: clinical care, research, education, or administration.

Additional Information

This position is based in Doha, Qatar and is a full-time onsite role. The successful candidate will work under minimal supervision and must be able to provide clinically sound advice, manage complex toxicology cases, and contribute to teaching, research, and service development.
