About the Role
We invite candidates passionate about viral pathogens, fascinated with mycology, or intrigued by uncovering rare organisms to apply for the Specialist Biomedical Scientist position within our Microbiology team at Royal Preston Hospital. This role demands involvement in identifying disease-causing pathogens through bacterial culture interpretation and serological analysis to support effective infection diagnosis. Your contributions are pivotal in guiding medical professionals in determining appropriate treatments swiftly for our patients.
The laboratory handles an extensive volume of more than 500,000 specimens annually, including samples like urine, blood, feces, and swabs sourced from hospital and community patients across the Preston and South Ribble regions. Our facility is UKAS-accredited (ISO15189) and serves as an approved training hub for IBMS.
Key Responsibilities
- Detect and classify microorganisms responsible for infections by reviewing bacterial culture results and serological data.
- Maintain and troubleshoot multiple automated diagnostic systems such as BacTAlert, Vitek2, MALDI-TOF, Vidas, and Cobas 5800 to ensure smooth laboratory operations.
- Communicate findings effectively to medical teams to facilitate prompt clinical decisions.
- Participate in an out-of-hours on-call system for handling urgent specimen analyses once fully inducted.
Candidate Profile and Working Conditions
This is a full-time (37.5 hours per week) in-person role working shifts between 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM, including weekends and Bank Holidays. Ideal applicants will be HCPC-registered with prior NHS laboratory exposure preferred.
