Overview

Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has modernised its pathology provision with brand-new laboratory facilities, advanced equipment, and a new laboratory information management system due to be introduced later in the year. This opening is for a Specialist Biomedical Scientist in Microbiology.

Role summary

You will work as a highly competent biomedical scientist handling microbiological investigations, specialist methods, and laboratory instrumentation. The role calls for sound professional judgement, the ability to deliver prompt and accurate results to clinicians, and a commitment to ongoing learning through structured training and self-development.

You will also support the growth of registered biomedical scientists and associate practitioners, help maintain strong quality standards, and take responsibility for a specialist area appropriate to a Band 6 post.

What the work involves

• Contribute to patient diagnosis, treatment, and overall clinical care through laboratory work.
• Process and examine a broad variety of specimens for diagnostic and screening purposes.
• Carry out methods used to identify disease-causing organisms, determine antibiotic sensitivity, and detect viral infections and immune responses.
• Work independently in the laboratory and rotate across department sections to build a flexible, multi-skilled approach.
• Select, perform, interpret, report, and validate laboratory tests using relevant knowledge and experience.
• Take part in internal and external quality assurance activity, follow QA procedures, record outcomes, act when results fall outside acceptable limits, and help with audits, non-conformance management, and document review.
• Check whether samples are suitable for testing and advise healthcare professionals on collection and testing methods.
• Support the supervision and training of other laboratory team members.
• Maintain accurate stock control and documentation for consumables.
• Join the on-call, late-night, and weekend rota.
