Role overview
An opening is available for a Medical Laboratory Assistant in the Microbiology Department at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, based at the Basingstoke site.
This position supports the diagnosis of disease by handling a variety of samples and body fluids, helping deliver better outcomes for patients.
Main duties
- Process and examine pathology specimens using both routine and more advanced diagnostic methods.
- Carry out laboratory work on a rotational basis depending on service demand.
- Perform scheduled maintenance on laboratory equipment and carry out basic corrective work and fault-finding where needed.
- Prepare quality control materials and compile the returned results.
- Confirm that quality control outcomes for analytical processes sit within approved limits, following laboratory procedures.
- Store samples correctly after testing and ensure they are disposed of at the right time.
- Receive, sort, and register samples on the Laboratory Information System (WinPath).
- Handle laboratory waste in accordance with health and safety requirements.
Skills and personal qualities
The ideal candidate will bring energy, motivation, strong organisation, and good people skills, along with a clear commitment to providing a high-quality laboratory service.
Good typing ability is required, together with a science background up to GCSE level. Previous computer experience would be beneficial.
Working pattern
This post requires support for a 7-day service. The appointed person must be willing to take part in weekend working.
