Job description
About the Role
Octopus Energy is focused on making energy fairer, cleaner, and better for everyone. In under a decade, the company has grown into the UK’s biggest energy supplier while maintaining a very strong customer reputation, with 89% of more than 650,000 reviews rating it as Excellent. The business invests heavily in renewable generation across Europe and is known for its open, distinctive culture.
This role is for a hands-on social media generalist who can create and publish engaging content across formats, respond quickly to internet moments, and help position Octopus as a brand people actively follow, share, and talk about. The goal is not just visibility, but using social channels to advocate for customers and help push the energy system toward something cheaper, greener, and fairer.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Producing a wide variety of social content, including videos, graphics, memes, and written posts, and turning ideas into polished output quickly.
- Creating reactive short-form video content, mini-documentary-style pieces, and simple energy explainers that are engaging and easy to understand.
- Acting as the team’s constant radar for internet culture, spotting trends, viral formats, trending audio, and cultural moments that the brand can use well.
- Bringing fresh ideas every week without waiting for briefs, and proactively suggesting new formats and angles that make audiences care about energy.
- Keeping a close watch on TikTok, X, Instagram, and YouTube to monitor trends and track public conversation around Octopus.
- Working alongside the Community Management team, helping navigate more complex customer interactions, and occasionally joining shift coverage.
- Helping keep priorities moving week by week rather than relying on long-term calendars, so output stays timely and relevant.
- Using performance data to learn what works, what does not, and how to improve future content.
Working Style and Location
This position is primarily based at the London headquarters in Oxford Circus. The working pattern is 4 days per week in the office for the first 6 months, then at least 3 days per week after that. The team values flexible working rather than a rigid 9-to-5 schedule, especially since social media activity does not follow standard office hours.
What You’ll Need
- Demonstrable experience creating content for a brand’s social media channels, either in-house or at an agency.
- Strong video shooting and editing ability, since this is a major part of the role; familiarity with Adobe Suite would be an advantage.
- Experience using social listening platforms, with Brandwatch noted as the tool used by the team.
- Solid graphic design ability so you can create assets such as memes, Stories, thumbnails, and other quick-turn content.
- A highly proactive, delivery-focused approach where you not only suggest ideas but also follow them through to completion.
- Deep familiarity with online culture, including how social content spreads and what drives virality.
- Good instinct for how people think, what they share, and why certain content resonates.
- An adaptable mindset and willingness to handle a wide mix of tasks, described by the company as being “T-shaped.”
- Genuine enthusiasm for helping create a major positive impact in the energy space.
Perks and Additional Information
Salary is not advertised. The company says compensation is discussed directly with recruiters so it can be aligned to your experience and the right fit, and they do not want salary visibility to discourage strong applicants.
