About the company
Octopus Energy is a global energy technology company with the ambition to make the world’s energy supply fully sustainable. The business is reshaping the market through new technology and a forward-looking, agile approach. Beyond green electricity tariffs, the company has been installing complete heat pump solutions with in-house specialists since 2022, and is also advancing smart meter rollout, e-mobility solutions, and its own power generation from wind and solar.
The team is looking for people who want to challenge the status quo and help drive the energy transition with solutions that are good for the planet and for your conscience.
Role overview
For the Financial Analytics function, the company is hiring a Senior Data Scientist with a strong focus on Credit Risk. The position calls for solid technical experience, confidence in building data pipelines, and a self-driven, ownership-oriented way of working.
What you will do
- Assess and interpret credit risk for both existing and prospective customers in electricity and gas supply.
- Build, maintain, and improve risk models and algorithms that predict payment defaults and support collections strategy.
- Spot risk concentrations and detect market shifts that could affect credit exposure.
- Prepare recurring and ad hoc reporting on current credit risk levels and the impact of mitigation actions for management review.
- Develop models for portfolio-level general loss provisions.
- Work closely with the global Credit Tribe to create data-driven solutions for cross-country reporting.
- Design and run pilots and A/B tests to determine which interventions are effective.
- Create outputs that feed into the regular management pack and provide stakeholders with the right insights.
- Draft project plans and pipeline architectures, and contribute both as a hands-on builder and as a guide for other team members.
- Support the ongoing evolution and implementation of the credit risk strategy with regulatory requirements and company goals in mind.
- Continuously refine scoring models, early warning systems, and debt collection strategies.
- Engage with external specialists and stay current on developments in risk management through industry events.
What we are looking for
- A completed degree in economics, mathematics, statistics, business informatics, computer science, or a comparable field.
- Several years of experience as a Data Scientist, Data Engineer, or Analytics Engineer.
- Very strong command of SQL and Python; dbt experience is considered an advantage.
- Strong analytical and conceptual thinking, with the ability to understand complex data structures and apply statistical methods confidently.
- A structured mindset, pragmatic problem-solving skills, and the ability to drive projects independently.
- Clear communication skills in both German and English, including the ability to explain complex topics in an understandable way.
- Self-motivation, a sense of responsibility, and a collaborative attitude.
Benefits
- Stock options in Octopus Energy Group Ltd.
- Discounted electricity and gas tariffs.
- Monthly contribution toward public transport tickets.
- Monthly meal allowance.
- Discounted bicycle leasing.
