About the Role

The A*STAR Infectious Diseases Labs (A*STAR IDL) is dedicated to becoming a global leader in infectious disease research and innovation, enhancing human health, and responding effectively to future pandemics and outbreaks. We are seeking a Senior Research Officer or Engineer to join our team and help maintain and operate our High Containment Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) Facility, critical in pandemic preparedness efforts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the upkeep and management of facility infrastructure such as Air Conditioning and Mechanical Ventilation (ACMV), Mechanical and Electrical (M&E) systems, Building Management System (BMS), gas and chemical handling systems, security access controls, pest control, and general maintenance to ensure safe and continuous BSL-3 facility operations.
  • Act as the principal point of contact for facility maintenance issues including equipment malfunctions, building-related problems, and emergency events to guarantee quick response and operational continuity.
  • Administer security protocols and access control to maintain compliance with biosecurity standards for authorized personnel within the BSL-3 environment.
  • Maintain facility documentation necessary for meeting regulatory and biosafety requirements.
  • Provide facility orientation and safety induction for vendors, contractors, and new users covering safety policies, emergency procedures, and security measures.
  • Handle procurement processes related to maintenance, services, and equipment acquisition, including assessment of vendors and contract management.
  • Support laboratory certification requirements, participate in audits, emergency drills, investigations, and drive continuous improvements in facility operations.

Prerequisites

  • A Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Facilities Engineering) or Biomedical Science.
  • At least three years of hands-on relevant experience in managing laboratory facilities, particularly in BSL-2 or BSL-3 environments, or related industrial setups.
  • Registration as a Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Officer; Fire Safety Manager certification is advantageous.
  • Knowledge of quality and biosafety management systems such as ISO 35001, ISO 17025, ISO 9001, or Good Laboratory Practice (GLP).
  • Experience supporting laboratory environments involving animal research is a plus.
  • Strong teamwork abilities, commitment to safety and compliance, self-motivated with the capacity to handle multiple priorities under strict deadlines.
  • Preparedness to work within BSL-3 conditions requiring personal protective equipment, including respiratory protection, and provide emergency response support outside standard hours if necessary.
