Role Summary

The Senior Product Designer plays a vital role within a collaborative team closely linked to user needs. Working alongside Product Managers and Engineers, this position leads the creative design of software products that delight customers. Responsibilities include managing design from concept through implementation, contributing to product vision, mentoring junior designers, and fostering a strong user-centered design culture.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Develop an in-depth understanding of customer behaviors and requirements to represent user perspectives throughout the product development cycle.
• Collaborate with Product Managers to perform user research, craft personas and behavioral profiles that guide product direction.
• Lead user experience tests to validate designs and iteratively refine solutions based on feedback.
• Address design within complex legal, security, regulatory, and accessibility constraints to ensure compliance.
• Define strategic design methods and approaches to standardize UX practices across product initiatives.
• Oversee visual design elements including color palettes, typography, composition, and brand consistency to maintain a contemporary and cohesive aesthetic.
• Create smooth interactive flows and user journeys that enable efficient task completion and enhanced satisfaction.
• Produce high-fidelity wireframes, mockups, and prototypes leveraging tools such as Figma to visualize and communicate design ideas.
• Supervise and recommend appropriate UX evaluation techniques, performance metrics, and levels of user involvement.
• Advocate and promote user-centered design principles organization-wide to secure commitment towards user-focused research efforts.
• Establish and update design documentation, standards, templates, and resources to facilitate scalable research and design excellence internally.
• Work collaboratively with both internal teams and external partners to ensure effective recruitment of users and smooth execution of usability testing.
• Build trust-based cross-functional partnerships with Product Management, Engineering, and fellow design professionals to support collaborative success.

Required Qualifications and Experience

• A bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in Product Design or relevant discipline.
• At least seven years of experience in product design within commercial software organizations.
• Demonstrated skill in building relationships directly with users and clients to deeply understand diverse software domains, user needs, and industry-specific challenges.
• Strong history of successful collaboration forming trusted partnerships among Product Management, Engineering, and design departments.
• Capable of independently planning, scheduling, and overseeing design deliverables while resolving complex challenges effectively.
• Excellent verbal and written communication abilities for explaining sophisticated design and technical topics clearly to varied audiences.
• Strategic mindset that applies creative thinking, manages risks, and utilizes current design technologies and digital tools to optimize performance.
• Dedication to ongoing professional growth, mentoring colleagues, and adherence to security, privacy, and ethical design standards.

Additional Details

This position is primarily office-based and requires working from the Christchurch, New Zealand office at least three days weekly.
