Job description

About the company

Seequent creates technology that helps organisations understand what lies beneath the surface so they can make faster, better-informed decisions. The company develops leading software for earth sciences that supports more sustainable mineral exploration, infrastructure design and construction, renewable energy sourcing, and lower environmental impact. It serves customers in more than 145 countries and is headquartered in New Zealand.

About the role

Seequent is expanding its AI capability within Seequent Evo, the geoscience data platform used by earth scientists and engineers around the world. The organisation is seeking a Team Lead to guide an AI engineering group and help shape how Generative AI features are designed, built, and integrated into the platform at scale.

This position brings together hands-on technical depth in GenAI with people leadership. The successful candidate will lead delivery of applied AI solutions that help customers uncover insights from complex subsurface data, streamline their work, and make stronger decisions. The role also involves building the team, setting strong engineering practices, and raising the overall standard of execution.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead a capable AI engineering team by providing technical guidance, operational direction, and a collaborative working environment.
  • Coach and support engineers through mentoring, feedback, and performance development.
  • Plan and distribute work across the team in a way that matches skills, priorities, and expected outcomes.
  • Contribute to recruiting and expanding the AI capability.
  • Set the technical direction for complex GenAI solutions and ensure designs align with engineering standards.
  • Advise the team on suitable modelling approaches and current AI design patterns.
  • Assess trade-offs in design decisions and ensure solutions satisfy both functional and non-functional needs, including security.
  • Run design and code reviews to maintain quality, consistency, and engineering discipline.
  • Oversee the development, testing, release, and ongoing support of production-grade GenAI systems.
  • Help deliver solutions such as retrieval-augmented generation, semantic search, vector-based retrieval, and agent-based or service-oriented architectures.
  • Ensure products are scalable, dependable, secure, and maintainable.
  • Own end-to-end delivery for medium-sized initiatives, including scope, risk, timelines, and stakeholder coordination.
  • Work closely with Product and Design teams to create outcomes that matter to customers.
  • Lead release planning, quality checks, and post-release retrospectives.
  • Promote strong software engineering, DevOps, and security practices across the team.
  • Improve team workflows, tooling, and standards to increase effectiveness.
  • Ensure compliance with CI/CD, testing, and governance expectations.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a comparable field.
  • At least 7 years of experience in software engineering, including work at a senior level.
  • Prior experience leading a team, whether in a formal management role or an informal leadership capacity.
  • Practical experience building and operating GenAI or LLM-based systems in production.
  • Strong knowledge of Generative AI and LLM application development.
  • Experience with RAG architectures, semantic search, and vector databases.
  • Familiarity with agent-based architectures and protocols such as MCP, A2A, or similar approaches.
  • Experience in cloud-native development and microservices, including Docker, Kubernetes, and APIs such as FastAPI.
  • Working knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and modern DevOps practices.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to remain hands-on technically while also carrying leadership responsibilities.
  • Experience coaching and mentoring engineers.
  • Ability to influence decisions, drive outcomes, and deliver results.
