Senior Investigator

About the role

Biosecurity Queensland works at the forefront of protecting Queensland’s environment, biodiversity, industries, economy, and the health of people and animals from plant- and animal-related pests and diseases. Within this environment, Strategy, Investment and Performance (SIP) supports Biosecurity Queensland by providing specialist advice, strong business practice guidance, and technology support for internal teams and other business stakeholders.

As a Senior Investigator, you will handle complex compliance investigations, support operational officers with investigation methods and legislation interpretation, and build productive working relationships across local, state, and national settings.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out advanced investigations into suspected breaches of legislation administered by Biosecurity Queensland.
• Coach and train authorised officers in investigation techniques and the correct application of legislation.
• Build and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders across local, state, and national levels.
• Apply sound judgement to determine suitable compliance responses following investigation findings.

Role requirements

• Demonstrated capability to conduct high-level investigations and decide on appropriate compliance actions.
• Prior experience in investigations, managing investigations, and/or giving oral evidence in court or tribunal settings will be highly regarded.
• Strong attention to detail, good time management, and effective problem-solving ability.
• A positive approach and the ability to contribute well within a close, connected team.

Essential conditions

• A current C class driver’s licence is mandatory.
• You must be willing to travel within the state and, in limited situations, work outside standard business hours.
• You need to be prepared to receive vaccinations, or show proof of previous vaccinations, for animal or plant-borne diseases such as Q fever.
• The role requires the ability to drive for extended periods in line with driver standards and complete limited manual tasks in the field.
