Job description
About the Team
KPMG Australia’s Mid-Market and Private division works with emerging and mid-sized private businesses as well as not-for-profit organisations. Within this group, the Risk Consulting practice focuses on helping clients strengthen governance, risk, and compliance through practical solutions, specialist expertise, and modern technology.
The team works on the design and transformation of risk functions, the creation of enterprise risk management frameworks, and advice across governance, risk, and control. It also helps clients identify and manage operational exposures, including conduct-related issues and changes in regulation.
The Opportunity
KPMG is looking for a Senior Consultant to join the Mid Market and Private Risk Consulting team, with a strong emphasis on Internal Audit. This position involves supporting and leading audit work for a wide range of clients, from start-ups to ASX-listed businesses across sectors such as local government, utilities, renewables, corporate services, and aged care.
You will help organisations understand risk, improve governance and internal controls, and deliver on strategic and operational priorities. The role also provides exposure to complex risk settings, senior decision-makers, and innovative tools and techniques used to produce high-quality outcomes.
This opportunity suits someone who is genuinely interested in internal audit, governance, risk, and compliance, and who enjoys working in a collaborative, high-performing professional services environment.
What You’ll Do
- Assist with the planning, delivery, and completion of internal audit and risk advisory assignments alongside managers and junior colleagues.
- Oversee a portfolio of internal audit clients and contribute to both engagement delivery and relationship management.
- Support a prominent advisory team working with well-known clients on risk management, governance, process reviews, controls, and technology-related risks.
- Lead internal audit assignments across areas such as procurement, contract management, capital delivery, sustainability, safety, financial controls, governance, and operations.
- Develop strong client relationships throughout and after engagements, while managing stakeholder expectations effectively.
- Guide and mentor junior team members through technical direction, day-to-day coaching, and review of deliverables.
- Participate in market-facing and business development activities, with the chance to target clients and sectors that interest you.
What You’ll Bring
- A collaborative, people-oriented style and the ability to adapt communication for audiences ranging from technical specialists to senior executives.
- Strong analytical and systems-thinking skills, along with the ability to prepare concise, clear, and high-quality internal audit reports.
- Confidence to challenge constructively, exercise professional judgement, and contribute value beyond basic compliance assurance.
- At least 1 year of experience in a Senior Consultant or similar capacity within Internal Audit, Audit, Project Assurance, program/project controls, Risk Consulting, or Advisory.
- Experience working across multiple clients, supported by strong communication and stakeholder management capabilities.
- Recent experience in audit or risk-related work, with a solid grasp of governance, risk, and controls, plus the ability to think strategically.
