Job description

Role overview

AECOM is seeking an experienced Senior Civil Engineer to join its Dublin team. The position focuses on delivering complex infrastructure work, especially in aviation and heavy civil engineering, while helping create technical solutions that satisfy client needs, applicable standards, and operational constraints.

What the role involves

You will contribute to the design and delivery of major civil and airfield-related projects from early concept stages through planning, detailed design, and construction. The work covers airfield geometry and pavements, navigational aid assessments, site development, drainage and utilities, external works for buildings, roads, car parks, and minor road improvements.

The role also includes preparing and coordinating drawings, calculations, quantity schedules, compliance reports, and contract documents, as well as checking the work produced by third-party consultants to confirm it is technically sound and aligned with Dublin Airport requirements.

Key duties

  • Lead or support the development of civil engineering solutions that satisfy technical, operational, aesthetic, and regulatory requirements.
  • Guide small to medium project teams and provide technical mentoring and oversight.
  • Manage coordination with outside consultants and design partners so deliverables are aligned and well integrated.
  • Evaluate external design packages and contractor submissions for completeness, compliance, and technical suitability.
  • Review civil engineering drawings, specifications, and design reports, then recommend changes that support the client’s strategic goals.
  • Make sure all design outputs meet industry rules, statutory requirements, and accepted best practice.
  • Deliver work packages that achieve quality, programme, cost, and performance targets.
  • Ensure design packages are coordinated and delivered to agreed milestones and project schedules.
  • Track contractor implementation to confirm compliance with approved designs during construction.
  • Plan works to reduce disruption to live operations while improving buildability, cost control, and schedule certainty.
  • Support value engineering and identify opportunities to improve cost efficiency without affecting safety, quality, or operational needs.
  • Prepare design risk assessments and health and safety documentation in line with current legislation and standards.
  • Assist with tender documents for consultants, contractors, and civil services, and provide technical input during procurement.
  • Promote sustainability, resilience, and whole-life cost thinking across project delivery.
  • Handle several priorities at once and stay solution-focused in a fast-moving environment.

Required background

The ideal candidate should have substantial experience in large infrastructure projects, with exposure to aviation and other core infrastructure markets. Knowledge of airport engineering, airfield systems, and aeronautical standards is an advantage, along with familiarity with Irish and UK sector practices.

Strong technical judgement, excellent communication skills, and the ability to collaborate across disciplines are important. The role also calls for leadership qualities and the confidence to mentor, motivate, and support other designers.

Technical and professional requirements

  • Demonstrated direct experience in the design and delivery of large-scale infrastructure projects.
  • Experience in Ireland or the UK engineering sector is beneficial.
  • Understanding of airport engineering principles, airfield infrastructure, and related aeronautical standards is preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and a proactive approach to resolving problems.
  • Clear written, verbal, and technical communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams and provide leadership support.
  • Familiarity with Transport Infrastructure Ireland and Irish Water/Uisce Éireann requirements and specifications.
  • Competence with Civil 3D, AutoCAD, MicroDrainage, and Autodesk Construction Cloud.
