Job description

Role overview

AECOM is looking for a Senior MEP Quantity Surveyor to join its Dublin office. The role sits within a hybrid arrangement, requiring three days on-site and allowing two days working from home each week. You will play a senior commercial role on major building services and infrastructure projects, supporting the Contracting Entity with cost control, contract compliance, and financial certainty across the full project lifecycle.

This position combines hands-on cost management with team leadership. Alongside overseeing MEP expenditure, you will guide Intermediate Quantity Surveyors and contribute to wider programme-level commercial objectives.

What the role involves

You will manage the commercial performance of MEP packages, ensuring that contractor applications, variations, claims, forecasts, and final accounts are checked and assessed in line with contractual terms, rates, bills of quantities, and reimbursement arrangements.

Programme cost management and commercial control

  • Help shape, roll out, and improve cost management processes, control systems, and governance approaches so they remain aligned with best practice and contract obligations.
  • Track adherence to cost control procedures and commercial controls, flagging any issues to programme and project leaders when needed.
  • Maintain programme-wide MEP cost strategies and support strong budget management and financial reporting.
  • Contribute to contractor KPIs covering cost performance, forecast accuracy, value management, and commercial compliance.
  • Manage variations, change control, retention, liquidated damages reviews, and monthly cashflow forecasting.
  • Provide commercial input into risk reviews and advise on the financial impact of existing and emerging risks.
  • Check and sign off forecast final costs and cost reports produced by the wider cost management team, with a focus on accuracy and transparency.
  • Set up clear escalation routes for cost and commercial matters across the programme.
  • Assist with the review and settlement of contractor claims, disputes, and commercial negotiations where required.
  • Support value-for-money outcomes through procurement input, commercial scrutiny, and cost assurance.
  • Build reporting processes that keep cost information timely, reliable, and consistent across the programme.
  • Develop productive working relationships with contractors, consultants, suppliers, and other stakeholders.
  • Provide specialist advice on construction and consultancy contracts, including claims, disputes, and contractual entitlements.

Pre-contract and post-contract cost management

  • Review schedules of rates, bills of quantities, and cost plans prepared by consultants to support pre-tender estimates and programme budgets.
  • Offer commercial commentary, benchmarking, and recommendations for procurement and tender evaluation work.
  • Assess and approve monthly valuations, cost reports, variation evaluations, and final account submissions across multiple MEP work packages.
  • Ensure payment recommendations and commercial assessments comply with contract terms and programme governance.
  • Monitor spending against approved budgets and forecasts, identifying trends, risks, and opportunities to improve commercial outcomes.
  • Lead final account discussions and close-out activity to bring projects to successful financial completion.

Leadership and team management

  • Lead, coach, and support Intermediate Quantity Surveyors, helping them grow professionally and follow best practice.
  • Provide technical direction on MEP measurement, valuation, change control, and contract administration.
  • Assist with resource planning and workload allocation so commercial services are delivered efficiently.
  • Encourage collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement within the cost management team.

Qualifications and experience

The successful candidate is expected to have experience in primary infrastructure markets and meet the following criteria:

  • A BSc or MSc degree in Quantity Surveying or Cost Management.
  • Professional registration on the Statutory Register of Quantity Surveyors in Ireland, with chartered status through RICS or SCSI preferred.
  • Strong IT capability, including the use of digital tools for measurement, cost planning, and tender documentation.
