Job description
Role overview
This position sits within Customers & Products and the Retail Group. The Senior Business Manager oversees a portfolio of around 50 to 60 sites and reports to the Retail & Convenience Senior Manager for New Zealand. The role is responsible for the capability and performance of a team of Business Managers, who lead Store Managers across assigned regions. Core accountability spans safety, people leadership, compliance, commercial delivery, and brand performance.
Key responsibilities
- Lead safety and compliance activity across the network, including senior-level incident investigations and recommendations for the Customer team.
- Deliver regional P&L outcomes by meeting sales margin and EBITDA targets.
- Build the capability of Business Managers and Store Managers so they can perform effectively in their roles.
- Work with the Senior Manager Retail & Convenience to create the region’s people plan.
- Design and support operational strategies that align with and advance wider retail objectives.
- Help shape regional structures that improve both people outcomes and commercial performance.
- Act as a senior operations leader for the New Zealand retail business, offering guidance on safety, engagement, and commercial execution.
- Handle escalated employment and disciplinary matters for senior site roles when needed.
- Carry out operations-related projects as required.
Experience and qualification requirements
- Proven ability to lead directly and indirectly, with a history of delivering results by coaching and developing teams.
- Strong financial understanding, including the ability to review financial statements and performance dashboards such as P&L and KPIs, then turn insights into operational action plans.
- Confident presentation and negotiation skills.
- Comfort using digital workplace tools, including Microsoft Office applications.
- Background in senior retail or FMCG operations management.
- Willingness to travel regularly throughout New Zealand.
- Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office tools, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
