Job description

Overview

The Manufacturing Sciences, Analytics and Technology (MSAT) department leads the industrialization and ongoing enhancement of biological manufacturing processes and products. This function integrates novel technologies and digital tools, while safeguarding process knowledge.

MSAT resides at the crossroads of research & development and manufacturing, encompassing expertise in process science, manufacturing, modeling, statistics, validation, and technology transfer.

The Scientist II role within the Upstream MSAT Laboratory at Modulus Singapore involves independently designing and executing lab studies to aid manufacturing troubleshooting, technology transfer, and lifecycle management of commercial biologics. This position supports evaluation of novel and automated technologies.

Collaborating closely with MSAT process engineers, the role transforms manufacturing challenges into methodical experimental plans, authors protocols and reports, and executes studies with scientific precision. The position operates autonomously under strategic guidance and occasionally requires flexible, after-hours support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and conduct small to mid-scale upstream laboratory experiments to address manufacturing issues, support technology transfer, and improve processes.
  • Work alongside MSAT process engineers to set clear study objectives and design precise experiments.
  • Prepare detailed study plans, protocols, reports, and technical records complying with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards.
  • Interpret data rigorously, form sound scientific conclusions, and communicate results to diverse teams.
  • Maintain safe, compliant, and timely laboratory operations.
  • Provide expert upstream scientific support for manufacturing investigation and troubleshooting.
  • Lead studies for root cause analysis and Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA).
  • Deliver urgent support as needed, including outside normal working hours.
  • Oversee laboratory readiness including equipment setup, maintenance, cleaning, and coordinating with vendors and engineers.
  • Manage inventory procurement and stock levels for materials and consumables.
  • Keep accurate laboratory documentation per GLP and Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) standards and evaluate operational documents for compliance.
  • Assist technology transfer through lab-based studies such as scale-down model qualification and bridging experiments.
  • Help prepare and compile technology transfer documentation and promote standardization and knowledge sharing across local and global teams.
  • Analyze manufacturing and laboratory data to recommend process optimizations and support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends and new upstream bioprocessing technologies, proposing suitable innovations.
  • Author documentation to facilitate change management, including risk assessments and mitigation approaches.
  • Mentor trainees and interns on laboratory techniques, scientific methodology, and GLP adherence.
  • Contribute positively to a collaborative, high-performing laboratory culture.

Requirements

  • Excellent communication skills suited for cross-functional and multicultural teamwork.
  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities anchored in data-driven approaches.
  • Self-directed, motivated to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • A scientific mindset with eagerness for continuous improvement.
  • Expertise in Design of Experiments (DOE) and statistical data analysis tools.
  • Knowledge of Process Analytical Technology (PAT) and monitoring methodologies.
  • Advanced degree in Biological Sciences, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or related disciplines.
  • Practical experience in biopharmaceutical labs, able to independently design/execute experiments.
  • Upstream bioprocess specialization including mammalian cell culture extending from seed trains to bioreactor systems.
  • Familiarity with pertinent analytical techniques and process parameter understanding in upstream workflows.
  • Experience in scale-down model development or qualification is a strong plus.
  • Awareness of HSE, GLP, and fundamental current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) in biopharma manufacturing.
