School Crossing Patrol - Templepatrick Primary School & Nursery Unit, Ballyclare

Role overview

This position is based with the Education Authority (Northern Ireland) and reports to the Transport Officer. The purpose of the role is to help children cross roads safely on their way to and from school. The post-holder will manage traffic at crossing points, use warning signs where needed, and watch for roadside dangers.

Key duties

• Supervise children’s conduct at road crossing points.
• Follow the Education Authority’s official guidance for school crossing patrol staff.
• Work in line with the Health and Safety at Work (NI) Order 1978, relevant legislation, statutory requirements and approved codes of practice.
• Carry out the role within the normal conditions associated with this type of work.
• Prepare and complete all required paperwork.
• Be willing to take on duties at the same grade, provided they are within your capability.
• Support good relations, equality of opportunity and compliance with equality law in line with Section 75 of the Northern Ireland Act 1998.

Essential criteria

To be shortlisted, applicants need to show willingness to complete job-related training.

During interview or selection, candidates must also demonstrate knowledge of road safety and traffic awareness, strong interpersonal and communication skills, good customer service skills, and the ability to use initiative while still following procedures. Candidates are also expected to show that their approach and experience reflect the organisation’s ethos and values.

Desirable criteria

Experience of working with children and/or members of the public is desirable and may be used to narrow the candidate pool if needed.

Background check and compliance

This role involves regulated activity with children or young people. If appointed, an enhanced criminal background disclosure will be required, and the candidate will need to pay the fee for the enhanced certificate.
