Job description
Role overview
This position is responsible for maintaining strong safety controls and ensuring safe execution of specialised military training activities, including heliborne operations, underslung activities, and light strike vehicle operations. The role also involves designing and driving safety programmes that reduce incidents and acting as the unit’s go-to specialist for safety matters.
Key responsibilities
- Create and run a full unit safety programme aimed at preventing incidents across four focus areas: safety education; incident reporting; investigation and analysis, including hazard and near-miss reporting; and safety audits and inspections.
- Revise the Unit Occupational Health and Safety Standard Operating Procedures whenever new or updated safety policies, regulations, or directives are released.
- Put forward corrective measures when inspections reveal gaps or when incidents take place.
- Provide expert advice to the unit on all safety-related issues.
- Confirm that safety appointment holders and conducting bodies are properly certified, qualified, and following the required safety standards and good practices, with accurate supporting records in place.
- Check that camp infrastructure meets the required technical certification and compliance standards.
Challenges of the role
- This is a specialised role that requires a strong grasp of the Army’s safety system and culture, along with its policies and directives in both local and overseas settings.
- The job involves a relatively high training tempo, with one or more overseas exercises each year, including overseas deployments.
What we are looking for
- Previous experience in training and safety is an advantage.
- You should stay current with changes to the Army’s safety systems and policies and be prepared to review and understand updates regularly.
- You must be able to work well with people of different ages and levels of experience.
- Strong communication skills are needed, including the ability to speak tactfully while still being firm when necessary.
- Candidates without prior experience may also apply.
