Overview and Responsibilities
The Safety Officer will actively manage and oversee the aviation safety program within the organization. Key duties include conducting safety audits, performing risk assessments, investigating incidents and accidents to identify root causes, and ensuring effective mitigation of safety hazards. The role involves maintaining and analyzing safety data systems, coordinating the aviation safety program, collaborating with training, security, quality assurance, and emergency response teams, as well as supporting compliance audits and safety awareness initiatives.
Key Duties
- Carry out safety-related audits regularly to ensure compliance and safety standards.
- Identify hidden hazards and conduct risk analyses on potential threats.
- Investigate incidents and accidents thoroughly to determine root causes.
- Ensure appropriate safety risk mitigation measures are implemented.
- Maintain the internal safety database to track trends and analyze hazards and incidents.
- Continuously monitor the effectiveness of corrective actions relating to safety issues.
- Stay abreast of civil aviation industry safety concerns and their impact on the organization.
- Coordinate and manage all aspects of the organization's aviation safety program.
- Work with the training department to facilitate safety-related staff training when needed.
- Oversee investigation and reporting of all incidents and accidents involving company assets.
- Distribute safety reports such as accident and incident notifications across the organization.
- Collaborate with security personnel to enforce safety within the security program.
- Monitor aircraft component reliability and audit service providers in conjunction with Quality Assurance.
- Support the emergency response plan and assist in compliance audits.
- Issue safety bulletins and promote safety awareness based on identified issues.
- Conduct safety meetings involving relevant personnel.
- Verify that safety equipment remains operational and conduct safety risk audits.
- Participate in regulatory and external audits (e.g., CAA audits).
- Assist OSHE Officer in managing the Occupational Health, Safety and Environment program.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Supervise external parties concerning safety practices around organizational assets.
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum Grade 12 certificate or equivalent is essential.
- At least five years of professional experience managing an Aviation Safety Program.
- Certifications required: Human Factors in Aviation, Train the Trainer, Aviation Auditor, Safety Management Systems for Aviation.
- Diploma or Degree related to the field (NQF Level 6 or 7) is advantageous.
- Additional valuable qualifications include Lead Auditor certification and Accident and Incident Investigation training.
