Job description
Role Overview and Operations
The First Officer plays a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of flights. Responsibilities include monitoring and navigating the aircraft, conducting all required checks prior to, during, and after the flight, liaising with internal teams, external providers, and passengers, and guaranteeing compliance with all aviation regulations and company procedures. In scenarios where the Captain is incapacitated, the First Officer assumes command of the aircraft.
Operational Responsibilities
- Ensure flight safety and timely completion of operations.
- Maintain constant monitoring of aircraft systems and position.
- Perform pre-flight, in-flight, and post-flight checks as stipulated.
- Communicate effectively with departments and passengers.
- Navigate and operate the aircraft according to regulations and company policy.
- Submit comprehensive and accurate legal and administrative documentation.
- Stay current with SACAA, ICAO regulations, and company manuals.
- Assist the Captain with operational, administrative, and crew discipline duties.
- Volunteer recommendations and support to enhance flight safety and efficiency.
- Upkeep of professional conduct, appearance, and morale amongst crew members.
Pre-Flight Duties
- Review flight routes, briefing materials, weather forecasts, and runway conditions for destination and alternates.
- Complete all operational checklists and documentation collaboratively with the Captain.
In-Flight Duties
- Execute and monitor normal, abnormal, and emergency procedures as outlined in the Operations Manual.
- Maintain vigilant observation of all instruments, immediately reporting any deviations or hazards to the Captain.
- Manage radio communications as necessary.
Post-Flight Duties
- Conduct post-flight procedures per manuals (OM and FCOM).
- Submit all required reports and documentation, including IQSMS.
Qualifications and Eligibility
- Minimum education: Grade 12 or equivalent.
- Must possess SACAA Commercial Pilot License (essential); SACAA Airline Transport Pilot License preferred.
- Class 1 SACAA medical certificate (mandatory).
- Type rating on Boeing aircraft is advantageous.
- Commercial jet experience on aircraft over 20 tons preferred.
- Minimum 1500 flight hours including 500 multi-turbine hours (non-type rated or Boeing type rated).
- Multi-crew operation experience required.
- No medical conditions that could impair performance.
- Must agree to training bonds if applicable.
- Clean criminal record and willingness to undergo drug and alcohol screening.
- Possess valid South African driver's license and own transport.
- South African citizenship with valid ID and passport.
- Willingness to work irregular hours as scheduled.
- Strong knowledge of SACAA, ICAO, and Doc 8186 regulations.
- Familiarity with Commercial and Airline Transport Pilot licensing requirements.
