Job description

Role overview

Join The AA as a Roadside Rescue Mechanic and help keep motorists moving by delivering dependable breakdown support across Welwyn Garden City and surrounding areas. You’ll be the reassuring first point of contact for members, responding in all kinds of weather and getting vehicles back on the road safely wherever possible.

The role offers a guaranteed first-year earning of £43,976 inclusive of allowances, with on-target earnings of up to £60,000 for strong performers.

Working pattern

This position averages 40 hours per week. A range of shift options is available, and you can select the pattern that best fits your personal and work commitments. Rest days and shift lengths will depend on the schedule you choose. Standby hours can also be selected each year to better support your lifestyle and work-life balance.

What you will do

  • Begin and end your shift from home, with pay covering the time from when you get into your van until you return.
  • Work alone across different locations and in changing conditions while remaining connected to a collaborative support network.
  • Use technical knowledge and strong communication to create a positive experience for customers.
  • Diagnose issues quickly and apply practical problem-solving to handle a broad mix of roadside breakdown situations.

What you need

  • An NVQ Level 3 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, or an equivalent qualification backed by relevant experience.
  • A full Category B driving licence with no more than 6 penalty points.
  • Confidence with technology and the ability to adapt to new tools.
  • Willingness to work a flexible rota that may include evenings, weekends, and Bank Holidays.

Benefits

  • Ability to choose your standby hours each year to support your preferred lifestyle and balance.
  • 23 days of annual leave, increasing with service, plus a holiday purchase scheme.
  • Worksave pension scheme with employer contributions of up to 7%.
  • Free AA breakdown cover from day one, plus 50% off for family and friends.
  • Discounts on AA insurance products, including motor and home cover.
  • Employee discounts, including a car salary sacrifice option and savings on healthcare, shopping, holidays, and more.
  • Company-funded life assurance.
  • Access to learning and development opportunities to support career growth.
  • Employee Assistance Programme and 24/7 remote GP support for you and your family.
