Job description

Overview

Join The AA as a Roadside Rescue Mechanic and help keep motorists moving when breakdowns or roadside issues interrupt their journey. You’ll be the reassuring first point of contact for members, arriving in all kinds of weather and situations to diagnose problems, provide practical support, and get people safely back on the road.

The role is based around roadside work and begins and ends from your home driveway, with paid time counted from when you get into your van until you return home.

Pay and working pattern

The base salary is £42,976, which includes a location allowance. Top performers can earn up to £60,000 total OTE. Guaranteed year 1 earnings include the location allowance and a £1,000 sign-on bonus in eligible locations. OTE is made up of standby hours pay, performance incentive, and overtime, and depends on performance and hours worked.

You will work an average 40-hour week. Several shift pattern options are available, and you can choose a schedule that better fits your personal and professional needs. Rest days and shift length will vary depending on the pattern selected.

What you will do

  • Travel from and back to your driveway in a company van, with paid time counted for the full journey window.
  • Work on your own across different locations and conditions while staying connected to a supportive team.
  • Use technical know-how and clear communication to create a positive experience for customers.
  • Troubleshoot problems on the spot and apply a calm, practical approach to a broad range of roadside incidents.

What you need

  • NVQ Level 3 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, or an equivalent qualification supported by relevant experience.
  • A full category B driving licence with 6 points or fewer.
  • Confidence with new technology and the willingness to adapt as tools and systems are introduced.
  • Availability for shift work, including evenings, weekends, and Bank Holidays.

Benefits

  • Ability to choose standby hour preferences each year to better suit your lifestyle and work-life balance.
  • 23 days of annual leave, increasing with service, plus a holiday buying scheme.
  • Worksave pension scheme with employer contributions of up to 7%.
  • Free AA breakdown cover from day one, plus a 50% discount for family and friends.
  • Discounts on AA products, including car and home insurance.
  • Employee discount access, including car salary sacrifice, healthcare, shopping, holidays, and more.
  • Company-funded life assurance.
  • Learning and development opportunities to support long-term career progression.
  • Employee Assistance Programme and 24/7 remote GP access for you and your family.
