Role overview
Lancashire County Council is hiring Residential Child Care Workers for its Children’s Residential Service in Skelmersdale. The roles sit within the wider Where Our Children Live programme and support two new settings that are due to open: Pause & Reflect Home and SPACE Hub.
This is a permanent position based onsite in Skelmersdale. The salary is £28,142 to £32,061 per annum, with extra pay available for shift patterns, weekend working, and sleep-in duties. The role is stated as 37 hours per week.
About the work
You will be working in a children’s home with young people aged 11 to 17. Residential Child Care Workers live and eat at the home with the children and young people, while also carrying out everyday household responsibilities such as cleaning, cooking, and shopping.
The children and young people supported in these homes cannot safely remain with their parents or family for reasons including adverse childhood experiences or trauma. Part of the role involves spending one-to-one time with them, helping them talk through feelings, emotions, and behaviour, and working closely with other professionals such as social workers, schools, police, and health staff to make sure their needs are properly met.
Pause & Reflect Home
The Pause & Reflect Home will be a two-bedroom setting for young people aged 11 to 17 who need urgent accommodation and support where no other options are available. Placements are expected to be short term, so the team will need people who are committed, supportive, and willing to go the extra mile during the young person’s stay.

The service is looking for people who want to help young people thrive. Previous experience is useful, but the focus is on personal qualities and attitude. Candidates should be passionate about making a difference, enthusiastic even when the work is challenging, and forward-thinking so they can help shape an expanding service with ambitious plans for the future.
Teamwork is important in this role, and you should be able to work closely with colleagues through difficult situations while staying committed to the children and young people in your care.
Working requirements and additional information
Because the SPACE Hub roles involve outreach work, applicants are expected to have a driving licence and access to their own vehicle. For Pause & Reflect Home, this is desirable rather than essential.
This vacancy cannot provide visa sponsorship.
If you are successful, you will need to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. The post is covered by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975, as amended in 2013.
You will also need to provide a car for work-related duties and ensure it is insured for business use. Consideration may be given if you are unable to drive because of a disability.
