Job description

Position Summary

Resident Physicians, along with Senior Resident Physicians, are qualified doctors who have completed basic postgraduate specialist training for three years and hold recognized postgraduate credentials. They carry more responsibilities than Medical and House Officers within hospital settings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily operations and management of wards, ensuring quality patient care and demonstrating strong diagnostic and clinical skills.
  • Supervise and provide teaching to House Officers, Medical Officers, and Trainees.
  • Attend all general referrals not assigned to specific consultants and handle urgent referrals during night shifts.
  • Communicate with the on-call Consultant about all complex or challenging cases admitted or referred for consultation.
  • Conduct ward rounds during night hours, outside regular office times, while on call or during admitting nights.
  • In emergencies or after hours, manage and authorize consultation referral letters.
  • Compile Confidential Mortality Reports to be submitted to the Chairman of the Medical Board through the Head of Department.
  • Represent the ward or hospital at Coroner’s inquiries or medico-legal hearings related to patients under their care.
  • Participate actively in departmental ward rounds, hospital teaching sessions, and clinical-pathological conferences.
  • In surgical departments, perform elective and emergency surgeries within limits determined by senior staff, and instruct Medical Officers in basic operative procedures.
  • Maintain specialty-specific knowledge and demonstrate enthusiasm for continual learning.
  • Undertake additional duties assigned by the Head of Department or Chairman of the Medical Board, including performing roles of lower grades if required.

Candidate Requirements

  • Completed three years of basic specialist postgraduate training with a recognized qualification.
  • Registered with the Singapore Medical Council.
  • Completed at least one year of housemanship and three years in medical officer postings.
