Job description

Overview

The Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 1759 titled "Habitability as a fundamental planetary process" investigates planetary habitability based on core physio-geo-chemical processes linked to planetary evolution, rather than Earth-specific biological factors. This interdisciplinary center combines natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities to explore conditions under which life may develop beyond Earth, study abiotic versus biotic biosignatures, and assess societal impacts including ethical considerations and public communication of scientific discoveries.

The position is based at the Institute of Pharmacy at Freie Universität Berlin, Germany, with funding until 30 June 2030. The earliest start date is 1 October 2026, with some flexibility.

Job Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be at praedoc (pre-doctoral) level and have the chance to pursue a doctoral degree. The research focuses on understanding organic molecules' formation and behavior on planetary surfaces, which is essential for assessing habitability. The project involves conducting controlled autoclave experiments using carbon dioxide and organic precursors with selected rock types to observe amino acid formation, their oligomerization, and templated peptide synthesis. The role requires preparation, planning, execution, and analysis of these chemical reactions.

Requirements

  • Completion of MSc degree in Chemistry, Pharmacy, or a related discipline by employment start
  • Preferred strong academic background with good to very good grades
  • Experience in chemical or pharmaceutical research particularly in synthesis and analytical techniques
  • Motivation for independent scientific research and ability to efficiently self-organize under deadlines
  • Excellent social and communication skills for interdisciplinary teamwork
  • High proficiency in English (at least B2/C1 level)

Application Details

Applications must be submitted in English as a single PDF (max 10 MB) including a cover letter, CV, degree certificates and transcripts, and contact information for two referees. Candidates may apply to multiple positions within the SFB, indicating the corresponding reference codes. Applications will be reviewed starting immediately after the deadline until the role is filled.
