About the Department

The Department of Political Science focuses on key political issues in North American societies, primarily the USA, alongside political theory related to North America. Teaching areas currently emphasize domestic politics, comparative courses, as well as foreign and security policy.

Primary Responsibilities

This position is situated within the US Foreign and Security Policy section under Prof. Dr. Lora Anne Viola. The main duties involve supporting Prof. Viola in teaching and research related to US foreign policy, international organizations, and transatlantic relations. Tasks include compiling and selecting reading lists, assisting with book preselection, proofreading, and seminar preparation.

Additional Tasks

Other responsibilities consist of conducting research, carrying out data analyses, preparing publications, and assisting with organizing the "Foreign Policy Speaker Series." The role offers a diverse range of tasks providing broad exposure to academic research environments. It involves substantial participation in research and teaching, with significant autonomy and flexibility in working methods.

Requirements

  • Students of North American Studies or Political Science, preferably specializing in International Relations, who are advanced in their bachelor's degree (for example, have completed the orientation module) or enrolled in a master's program
  • Strong to excellent academic performance in US foreign policy
  • Very good English and German language skills (C1 level)
  • Proficiency with computer applications
  • Interest in academic research
  • Familiarity with North American foreign policy
