Job description
About the company
This role sits within a fast-scaling cross-border fintech focused on helping families, supporting local economies, and expanding access to financial services in emerging markets. Since launching in 2019, the business has reworked the way money moves internationally, with operations reaching 6 of 7 continents and serving both high-volume and hard-to-serve remittance routes. The company has ridden the shift from banks to phones to bring digital finance to places where conventional systems were limited, and its next phase of growth includes building additional services for diaspora communities such as local cards, savings tools, and payment features.
The company is growing rapidly and is supported by leading investors, combining meaningful real-world impact with advanced fintech innovation.
More about the team
- Founded by Harvard graduates and serial founders who previously built Segovia, which was acquired, and GiveDirectly, which grew into a $300M+ revenue organisation.
- Supported by prominent backers including Spark Capital, Canaan, Reid Hoffman, Breyer Capital, Unbound, Wamda, and others.
- Built by high-performing professionals from Bain, Google, McKinsey, Uber, Checkout, Bolt, and more, with a culture that values speed, humility, and mission.
- A genuinely global workforce of 250+ people representing 50+ nationalities and 50+ languages.
- Guided by ownership, impact, humility, and heart, applied in practice rather than as slogans.
Role overview
As Regulatory Counsel, you will report to the Director of Regulatory Affairs and handle a wide-ranging portfolio covering product launches, market expansion, and day-to-day regulatory compliance. You will work closely with teams across the business, advising decision-makers, supporting projects, drafting and negotiating agreements, and explaining legal issues clearly to both legal and non-legal audiences while balancing commercial and legal priorities.
Key responsibilities
- Own the legal and regulatory workstream for both new product launches and ongoing product development.
- Partner with product, compliance, finance, and information security teams to resolve day-to-day regulatory issues and keep the business compliant.
- Work with the wider legal team to assess risks, develop practical solutions, and help the company adapt to a changing regulatory environment.
- Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to create workable approaches for licensing and regulatory matters.
- Represent the business in discussions with regulators.
- Support licence applications for new market entry and manage continuing regulatory matters across all active markets.
Candidate profile
- You are a qualified lawyer with 5 to 10 years of practice experience in payments or another regulated sector.
- You have in-house experience and have worked in a fintech environment, preferably in payments.
- You understand the regulatory rules that govern financial products and services; prior regulator exposure is a plus but not essential.
- You bring strong initiative, independence, and ownership, and can contribute effectively in a fast-growing business.
- Experience in APAC markets would be advantageous, though it is not mandatory.
What makes someone successful here
- Outgoing and comfortable building strong relationships through conversation.
- Execution-focused, with the ability to turn ideas into real-world action.
- Mission-driven, with enthusiasm for purpose-led or tech-for-good work.
- Well organised, with a clear system for prioritising and staying on track.
- Ambitious and motivated in a target-oriented environment.
Values
- Impact first.
- Team next.
- Accept reality.
- Propose solutions.
- Win with grit.
- Be proactively candid with yourself and others.
- Love the particular.
- Own it.
- Create positive energy.
- Maybe, even have fun.
Equal opportunity and accommodations
The employer is committed to equal opportunity and to building an inclusive, diverse workforce. Hiring decisions are based on qualifications, experience, and business need. Candidates from underrepresented communities are strongly encouraged to apply. If you need reasonable adjustments during recruitment, you can request them and any details shared will only be used to support those accommodations.
Additional note
The company recognises that imposter syndrome is common and encourages people to apply even if they do not match every single requirement perfectly.
