Job description
Role overview
ABI Rehabilitation New Zealand is seeking an experienced Registered Social Worker to join its inpatient rehabilitation team in Kenepuru, Porirua, Wellington. This is a permanent position that can be offered on either a full-time or part-time basis.
The organisation is a CARF-accredited rehabilitation provider with a strong focus on brain injury recovery for adults. Its approach is centred on high-quality, evidence-based, person-focused rehabilitation delivered through a collaborative inter-professional team.
What the role involves
You will support clients in an intensive inpatient rehabilitation environment through practical and therapeutic social work intervention. The position includes working closely with clients and their whānau, contributing to counselling and liaison, running appropriate therapy groups, and taking part in staff training and development.
The caseload is broad and requires you to address complex psychosocial needs while helping to improve rehabilitation outcomes for people with neurological impairment.
Candidate profile
The ideal applicant will bring strong social work knowledge, relevant clinical experience, and the ability to communicate well with people from varied backgrounds. You should be comfortable working as part of an inter-professional team and applying a strengths-based approach in your practice.
Experience supporting patients and whānau in a health setting is important, especially where psychosocial needs are complex. Prior work with neurological impairment is highly valued. Background in alcohol and drug services or mental health is preferred.
A current Social Workers Registration Board registration, an active annual practising certificate, and a full New Zealand driver’s licence are required. Applicants should also have at least two years of social work experience. Postgraduate study or a master’s-level equivalent is preferred, though not essential.

The role also provides opportunities for personal and professional growth within a supportive and dynamic team environment. Staff can access discounts with selected retailers including PB Tech, Pita Pit, PlaceMakers, Repco, Torpedo7, Tower Insurance, and others.
