Job description
Position Overview
Become a vital team member as a Ranger based on Mulgumpin (Moreton Island), working to safeguard lands owned by the Quandamooka People, under the management framework of Gheebulum Kunungai National Park. The park is co-managed with the Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation (QYAC). As the second in command, you will assist the QPWS Ranger in Charge with projects, internal systems, and partner closely with QYAC Joint Management Rangers to conduct pest, weed, and fire management initiatives aimed at preserving the natural and cultural integrity of the park.
Key Functions
- Support the Ranger in Charge by managing projects and administrative tasks.
- Work alongside QYAC Rangers on joint pest, weed control, and fire management programs including feral animal control and planned burns.
- Conduct compliance monitoring, especially during peak visitor periods such as weekends and holidays; demonstrate elevated autonomy and sound decision-making.
- Engage and communicate effectively with local island stakeholders and coordinate emergency responses with other responding agencies.
- Act as the primary point of contact when the Ranger in Charge is off-duty.
Work Environment & Location
This role is based in a remote location on Mulgumpin (Moreton Island) with a rotational 9-day shift followed by 5 days off to accommodate travel and rest. Accommodation is provided at the Ben Ewa Ranger Base. The island offers a unique lifestyle with limited access to shops, medical services, and schools. Daily commuting from the mainland is impractical due to ferry scheduling.

This position requires a candidate with strong land management expertise ready to lead, mentor, and contribute immediately. It is not suited for individuals seeking extensive developmental opportunities but rather for those capable of providing confident leadership in a remote setting.
