Job description

Role Overview

This position offers the opportunity to enhance conservation efforts across Central Otago by cultivating strong partnerships with iwi, community organizations, volunteers, businesses, and other local stakeholders to foster positive environmental outcomes. The role is based permanently in the Wānaka or Alexandra office.

Key Responsibilities

  • Establish and nurture robust relationships with iwi, volunteers, community groups, businesses, councils, and conservation partners.
  • Facilitate and support community-led conservation projects and initiatives throughout the district.
  • Spot and develop opportunities to expand conservation efforts through partnerships and cooperative collaboration.
  • Provide administrative assistance, liaison, and advocacy to projects aimed at amplifying conservation by engaging iwi, businesses, and the broader community.
  • Engage local communities to promote conservation awareness and encourage their active involvement.
  • Monitor commercial and private activities on public conservation land, ensuring the maintenance of accurate and current database records.
  • Deliver informed contributions to planning processes under the Resource Management Act.
  • Offer field support related to statutory land management functions.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for conservation and a genuine interest in working collaboratively with diverse groups to advance common goals.
  • Excellent organisational capabilities paired with strong interpersonal and communication skills to build and maintain relationships.
  • Proactive mindset with the aptitude to prioritise multiple tasks efficiently and make informed decisions.
  • Experience in managing several workstreams and handling competing demands.
  • Valid New Zealand driver’s licence.
  • Willingness to participate actively outside office settings, including attending meetings, engaging stakeholders, and conducting site visits.

Desirable Attributes

  • Familiarity with the Central Otago region.
  • Experience collaborating with iwi, community groups, local councils, businesses, or conservation entities.
  • Background in coordinating community projects, partnerships, or volunteer programs.
  • Understanding of statutory and regulatory frameworks, including Resource Management Act processes and public conservation land governance.
