About the Company

G. James Glass & Aluminium is a long-established Australian, family-owned organisation with more than 1,800 employees across the country. With over a century in operation, the business is known for dependable service, product quality, and investing in the growth of its people and offerings.

Role Overview

G.James Windows & Doors is looking for a Product Designer to join its Product & Technical team in Brisbane. This position is central to the design, refinement, and development of window and door systems that align with customer expectations, satisfy Australian regulatory requirements, and contribute to the company’s long-term growth.

In this role, you will partner with the Product Manager and other teams to develop practical, manufacturable, and innovative product solutions. Your work will span the complete product journey, including concept creation, detailed design, prototyping, testing, and launch preparation. It is a hands-on technical role that combines creative thinking with engineering rigour, collaboration, and problem-solving.

Responsibilities

  • Create and refine window and door products that balance performance, appearance, and functional requirements.
  • Prepare detailed CAD drawings, 3D models, specifications, and technical documentation for prototyping and manufacturing.
  • Ensure product designs meet Australian Standards, relevant building codes, and internal quality expectations.
  • Assist with prototype builds and testing, including wind and water resistance, acoustics, cycling durability, security, and energy performance.
  • Review test outcomes and translate findings into design enhancements.
  • Improve product designs for manufacturability, production efficiency, and cost control.
  • Support the Product Manager in commercialising products and bringing them to market.
  • Work with manufacturing, procurement, sales, and marketing teams to preserve design intent through execution.
  • Help drive ongoing product improvements using market feedback and technical developments.
  • Keep design files, records, and documentation current and accurate.
  • Encourage and follow strong workplace health and safety practices.

Requirements

  • Background in product design within manufacturing, construction, or building products, with windows and doors strongly preferred.
  • Advanced skills in CAD tools such as AutoCAD, Inventor, and other 3D modelling software.
  • Working knowledge of aluminium extrusion, glazing systems, and hardware design.
  • Understanding of Australian window and door standards, including AS2047.
  • Ability to produce precise technical drawings, specifications, and tolerance details.
  • Experience supporting prototyping, product testing, and validation work.
  • Strong analytical thinking and attention to detail.
  • Clear communication and effective teamwork across technical and non-technical groups.
  • Competence with Microsoft Office and design/documentation systems.
  • Qualification in industrial design, engineering, or a related field is preferred.

Perks

  • Permanent full-time position with a stable Australian family-owned company.
  • Collaborative and supportive product development environment.
  • Competitive pay package aligned to experience.
  • Health insurance benefit with a 7% BUPA discount.
  • Employee Assistance Program through TELUS Health.
  • Complimentary on-site parking.
  • Access to ongoing learning and development opportunities.

Additional Information

Before starting employment, the selected candidate must complete a pre-employment medical assessment, which includes drug and alcohol screening. The company notes that it will celebrate 109 years in 2026 and operates as an equal opportunity employer.
