Established in 2008 and consistently profitable since 2014, our products—including browsers for Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android, along with our search engine and subscription services—serve millions globally. The company culture emphasizes trust, inclusiveness, and autonomy, empowering team members with broad project ownership throughout each initiative's lifecycle.
Role Overview
As the Director of Privacy Engineering, you will be instrumental in addressing the most intricate privacy matters across DuckDuckGo’s products. You will lead pivotal privacy-focused engineering projects such as:
- Developing frameworks for managing privacy in AI-powered browsing tools, tackling unique data protection needs in new technology spaces.
- Creating scalable, privacy-focused solutions for search indexing while maintaining strict privacy standards.
This role involves managing complex privacy projects from inception to delivery, refining privacy triage and review processes, spearheading process automation to streamline engineering, and mentoring a world-class privacy engineering team. You'll also help craft company-wide privacy strategies and drive critical cross-functional conversations.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead end-to-end delivery of high-impact privacy initiatives across products.
- Oversee privacy triage and review systems and implement scalable automation.
- Recruit, develop, and mentor privacy engineers.
- Shape privacy strategies while balancing diverse stakeholder needs.
- Communicate complex privacy concepts for both technical and non-technical audiences.
Required Qualifications
- At least 10 years in privacy engineering, reviews, audits, or technical program leadership at organizations serving more than 1 million consumers.
- Minimum 4 years in a privacy engineering leadership role, involving infrastructure, data minimization, or privacy-preserving solutions.
- Experience in roles such as Director, Head of, or VP with proven hiring and team management.
- Demonstrated capability to independently drive complex, cross-functional projects.
- Strong process improvement skills: automation, identifying workflow bottlenecks, and designing scalable solutions.
- Exceptional communication abilities for stakeholder engagement and decision-making.
- A genuine commitment to privacy and trust online.
Compensation & Benefits
- Annual salary of $243,800 USD plus stock options. Transparent pay model—team members at the same level and region receive identical compensation.
- Health benefits are available to US-based employees. Employees outside the US are not eligible for this program.
- Comprehensive support including paid parental leave, office setup, and co-working space allowances.
Additional Information & Expectations
- Participation in video meetings and attendance at two annual in-person events (each 4-5 days) is expected; exceptions may be accommodated under special circumstances.
- This position requires an average commitment of 40 hours per week, with flexible hours and no strict core schedule.
- All finalists must successfully complete a background check prior to starting.
- Providing false information during the application process will result in disqualification or termination.
Recruitment Practices & AI Disclosure
- DuckDuckGo utilizes AI technology during candidate screening for summarization and fraud detection. All final decisions are made by humans with oversight of these tools.
- Applicants’ privacy is maintained per the company’s recruiting policy, and transparency is assured throughout the recruitment process.
- Alternative selection methods are available upon request.
