Job description
Role overview
HMP Bullingdon is recruiting an Operational Support Grade (OSG) to help keep prison operations running safely and efficiently. This is an active, varied position that combines desk-based work with practical duties across the site.
What the role involves
You will support day-to-day prison operations as part of a collaborative team. Typical tasks include security checks and searches at the gate, receiving and handling deliveries, supervising visitors, and monitoring phone calls and CCTV. The job can also involve physical activity such as lifting, carrying, and walking to escort vehicles across the prison grounds.
Working pattern and travel
The role includes a range of shifts, with weekend and night working as part of the rota. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so it is essential that you can arrive and leave work on time. The prison may be in a rural location with limited public transport, so having a driving licence and your own transport may help, although this is not usually mandatory unless specifically stated.
Licence requirement
Applicants must hold a full, valid UK driving licence that includes category D1. This category permits driving vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer weighing up to 750kg.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are required. This opportunity may suit someone who communicates well, stays calm in pressured situations, uses sound judgement, and works well with others. The role is fast-paced and offers a chance to begin a career in the prison service.
Career development
The position offers valuable insight into how a prison operates and may open the door to other roles within the prison service, including progression routes and the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.
Training and benefits
You will receive training and development support, along with access to a range of employment benefits.
- 25 days of annual leave on appointment, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata
- 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays
- Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service
- Access to the Civil Service pension scheme
- Season ticket loans
- Retail discounts
- Employee Assistance Programme
- Cycle to Work scheme
Pay
The advertised salary is £29,432 per year.
