Job description

Role Overview

Join HMP Bullingdon as an Operational Support Grade (OSG) and contribute crucially to the smooth operation of a busy prison. Your duties will be varied, combining administrative tasks with physical activities such as lifting and escorting vehicles. This role supports security operations including administering searches at the entrance, managing deliveries, overseeing visitors, and monitoring communication through phone calls and CCTV.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure security processes at entry points including conducting searches.
  • Manage incoming and outgoing deliveries efficiently.
  • Supervise visitor activity within the establishment.
  • Monitor telephone conversations and CCTV footage for security compliance.
  • Escort vehicles safely across prison premises.
  • Perform assigned physical tasks involving walking and carrying as needed.

Candidate Requirements

  • Possession of a full, valid UK driving licence including D1 category for driving vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats and trailers up to 750kg.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Good judgment, common sense, and effective teamwork capabilities.
  • Flexibility to work varied shifts, including nights and weekends.
  • No formal qualifications necessary but professionalism and reliability are essential.

Additional Information

While this role involves limited direct contact with prisoners, occasional interaction may occur depending on specific prison circumstances. The location is in a rural setting with limited public transport options; therefore, owning transportation and a driving licence is advantageous. Shift times are fixed and punctual attendance is a responsibility of the applicant.

Career Prospects and Benefits

  • Receive comprehensive training and development opportunities.
  • Potential to progress into other prison roles, including eligibility for conversion from OSG to Prison Officer.
  • Starting salary: 29,432 per year.
  • Annual leave starts at 25 days, increasing to 30 days after 10 years’ service (pro-rated).
  • 9 days of bank, public, and privilege holidays.
  • Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service.
  • Participation in Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, Employee Assistance Programme, and Cycle to Work scheme.
