Job description

Role Overview

Join His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service as an Operational Support Grade (OSG) at HMP Bullingdon, located in Lower Arncott, England. This position involves supporting day-to-day prison operations, contributing to a safe and efficient environment. The role blends desk-based tasks with physically active duties, such as supervising deliveries, conducting security and search procedures at entry points, visitor management, and monitoring communications and CCTV systems.

Responsibilities

  • Implement security measures including searches and gate management
  • Supervise visitor access and manage deliveries
  • Monitor inmate phone calls and oversee CCTV operations
  • Escort vehicles within prison premises
  • Participate in a variety of shifts, including nights and weekends, ensuring continuous operational support

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Possession of a full, valid UK driving licence including D1 category, enabling driving of vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 meters, and trailers up to 750kg
  • Strong communication skills and ability to maintain composure in high-pressure situations
  • Capability to perform physically demanding tasks such as lifting, carrying, and escorting
  • Good judgement, common sense, and a collaborative mindset
  • No specific educational qualifications required

Additional Information

Though contact with prisoners is generally limited, occasional interaction may be required depending on the specific prison setting. The role offers valuable insights into prison operations and potential career progression, including pathways from OSG to Prison Officer through conversion schemes.

Benefits and Perks

  • Starting annual leave of 25 days, increasing to 30 days after 10 years of service (pro-rated)
  • 9 days of bank, public, and privilege holidays
  • Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service
  • Enrollment in the Civil Service pension scheme
  • Additional perks such as season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme

Work Location and Travel Considerations

HMP Bullingdon’s rural location may limit public transport options; therefore, holding a suitable driving licence and access to private transport is highly advantageous. Shift start and finish times are fixed, underscoring the importance of reliable commuting arrangements.
