Job description
Role overview
This position is for an Operational Support Grade at HMP Long Lartin, working within His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service. The role is a hands-on support job that helps keep a prison operating safely and efficiently on a daily basis.
What you will do
You will be part of a team carrying out a wide range of operational support duties. These may include security checks and searches at the gate, handling incoming deliveries, supervising visitors, and keeping an eye on phone activity and CCTV. The job combines desk-based tasks with physical work such as lifting, carrying, and walking escort vehicles across the prison site.
Working pattern and travel
This role involves fixed shift start and finish times, so you must be able to arrive on time for every shift. Because some prisons are in rural areas with limited public transport, having a driving licence and your own transport can be helpful, although it is not mandatory unless specifically stated. You should think carefully about how you will travel to and from the workplace.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are needed. This job may suit someone who communicates well, stays composed in demanding situations, uses sound judgement, and works well as part of a team. The position is fast paced and offers a chance to build a career in prison services.
Career outlook
Although contact with prisoners is limited compared with prison officers, you may interact with them occasionally depending on the establishment. The role provides valuable insight into how a prison functions and can open pathways into other prison careers, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.
Training and development
You will receive training along with opportunities to progress and develop within the service.
Pay and benefits
The annual salary is £29,432. Alongside base pay, you will receive 25 days of annual leave on joining, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata. You will also get 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays, access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, entry to the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Additional notes
The role is described as an extraordinary opportunity to support public safety and contribute to important work carried out every day in prison settings.
