Job description
Role Overview
Join His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service at HMP Isle of Wight as an Operational Support Grade (OSG). This vital role contributes to the smooth and secure daily operations of a busy prison facility. Responsibilities encompass a mix of administrative tasks and physical activities, including security checks at the entrance, managing incoming deliveries, supervising visitor access, and overseeing phone calls and CCTV monitoring. Essential driving duties are included, thus a valid UK driving licence is mandatory.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct security and parcel searches at the prison gate.
- Manage deliveries efficiently and ensure proper documentation.
- Supervise visitor access to maintain security protocols.
- Monitor inmates' telephone calls and CCTV footage to ensure safety.
- Perform escort duties, including moving vehicles within prison grounds.
Candidate Profile
Applicants need no formal qualifications but must be effective communicators who remain calm under pressure. Good judgment, common sense, and a collaborative team spirit are essential for success. The role requires flexibility to work various shifts, including weekends and nights.
Career Development
This unique position offers the chance to contribute to public safety and positively influence lives. While contact with prisoners is limited compared to prison officers, occasional interaction may occur. The role provides valuable insights into prison operations and pathways to other positions, including a conversion scheme from OSG to Prison Officer.
Benefits and Compensation
- Starting salary: £29,432 per year.
- Annual leave starts at 25 days, increasing to 30 days after 10 years of service (pro-rata).
- 9 additional bank, public, and privilege holidays annually.
- Access to paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service.
- Participation in the Civil Service pension scheme.
- Additional benefits: season ticket loans, retail discounts, Employee Assistance Programme, and Cycle to Work scheme.
