Job description

Overview

Join His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service as an Operational Support Grade at HMP Isle of Wight, where you will contribute to the smooth running of a busy correctional facility. This role blends administrative tasks with active duties such as security checks at entry points, managing deliveries, supervising visitors, and monitoring phone calls and CCTV footage. Physically, the position involves walking extensively, lifting, and escorting vehicles within the prison grounds.

Driving is a fundamental responsibility in this role, requiring candidates to possess a full and valid UK Driving Licence.

Role Expectations

No formal qualifications are necessary to apply. Ideal candidates should be effective communicators, able to maintain composure in high-pressure situations, and possess sound judgment and common sense. Being a cooperative team member is essential to succeed. The role requires working varied shifts, including nights and weekends.

This position offers the chance to contribute to public safety and make a significant impact within the prison environment. While direct prisoner interaction is limited compared to prison officers, some occasional contact may occur depending on the facility.

Growth and Opportunities

Working as an Operational Support Grade provides valuable insight into prison operations, with potential pathways to other roles within the prison service, including a conversion program from OSG to Prison Officer.

Benefits and Terms

  • Starting salary of £29,432 per year.
  • Annual leave of 25 days upon starting, increasing to 30 days after ten years of service (calculated pro-rata).
  • Nine bank, public, and privilege holidays annually.
  • Eligibility for a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service.
  • Access to the Civil Service pension scheme.
  • Additional benefits including season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.

If you are ready to take on this extraordinary role and contribute to a vital public service, consider applying.
