Job description

Role Overview

Join His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service as an Operational Support Grade (OSG) at HMP Grendon and Springhill in Broughton. This position offers you an opportunity to contribute significantly to the smooth and safe operation of a busy prison environment.

Key Responsibilities

As an OSG, you will be involved in a diverse set of duties from managing security procedures and conducting searches at the prison entrance, to handling deliveries, supervising visitors, and monitoring telephone communications and CCTV footage. The job mixes administrative desk tasks with physical activities such as lifting and escorting vehicles across the prison premises. You will be expected to work varied shifts inclusive of nights and weekends.

Who We Are Looking For

The role requires no formal qualifications but demands excellent communication skills and an ability to maintain calmness under pressure. Being a team player with sound judgment and practical common sense is essential. Additionally, a full and valid UK driving licence is mandatory due to the driving duties integral to this role.

Benefits and Development

  • Competitive salary of 29,432 per annum
  • Starting annual leave of 25 days, increasing to 30 days after 10 years of service on a pro-rata basis
  • 9 days of bank, public, and privilege holidays
  • Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service
  • Membership in the generous Civil Service pension scheme
  • Additional benefits including season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and participation in the Cycle to Work scheme

Additional Information

The position offers limited contact with prisoners, primarily focusing on support rather than custodial duties. It provides valuable exposure to the inner workings of prison operations with opportunities to transition into other prison roles, including potential eligibility for the OSG to Prison Officer conversion programme.
