Job description
Role Overview
Join His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service at HMP Bullingdon as an Operational Support Grade, playing a crucial role in the smooth and secure daily operations of a busy prison environment. Your responsibilities will range from conducting security checks and searches at the gates to overseeing deliveries, visitor supervision, and monitoring communications and CCTV. This dynamic role blends administrative desk tasks with physically active duties such as escorting vehicles across the prison grounds and handling equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform security checks and searches upon entry to the prison.
- Manage and supervise deliveries entering the premises.
- Oversee visitor access and ensure security through monitoring visits.
- Monitor prisoner phone calls and CCTV surveillance.
- Escort vehicles through the prison grounds as needed.
Candidate Profile
No formal qualifications are required to apply, but strong communication skills and the ability to remain calm and composed under pressure are vital. Good judgment, common sense, and teamwork are essential qualities to succeed in this fast-paced role. You will work varied shifts including nights and weekends.
Additional Requirements
- Applicants must possess a full, valid UK driving licence including category D1, which authorizes driving of vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, maximum length of 8 meters, and trailers up to 750 kg.
- Own transport is beneficial due to rural location and limited public transport, but not mandatory.
- Shift times are fixed and punctuality in commuting to the workplace is the applicant’s responsibility.
Career Opportunities and Benefits
This role offers valuable insight into prison operations and the opportunity to eventually transition into prison officer roles through internal conversion schemes. Comprehensive training and professional development are provided.
- Starting salary of £29,432 per year.
- Annual leave of 25 days, increasing to 30 days after 10 years’ service (pro-rated).
- Nine days of bank, public, and privilege holidays.
- Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service.
- Participation in the Civil Service pension scheme.
- Additional benefits including season ticket loans, retail discounts, Employee Assistance Programme, and Cycle to Work scheme.
