Job description

Role overview

HMP Isle of Wight is looking for an Operational Support Grade to help keep the prison operating effectively each day. This is a busy, hands-on support position within a collaborative team, covering a mix of security, visitor management, deliveries, phone and CCTV monitoring, and escort-related duties across the site.

The role includes both desk-based work and active physical tasks such as lifting, carrying, walking, and moving between areas of the prison grounds to support vehicle escorts and other operational needs.

Driving is an essential part of this position, so applicants must hold a full, valid UK driving licence.

What the role involves

  • Supporting the daily running of the prison through varied operational tasks.
  • Handling security checks and searches at the gate.
  • Managing incoming deliveries and supervising visitors.
  • Monitoring telephone calls and CCTV systems.
  • Carrying out physical duties that may involve lifting, carrying, and walking across the site.
  • Working alongside the team to maintain safe and smooth prison operations.

About you

No formal qualifications are needed for this post. The employer is seeking someone who can communicate clearly, stay composed in pressured situations, and work well in a fast-moving environment.

You should use sound judgement, practical common sense, and a strong team mindset. The role also includes a shift pattern, with weekend and night work required.

Career development

This position offers a rare opportunity to contribute to public safety while learning how prison operations work in practice. Contact with prisoners is generally limited, though occasional interaction may happen depending on the establishment.

The role can also open doors to further prison service careers, including the chance to apply for the OSG to Prison Officer conversion pathway.

Training and progression

Full training is provided, along with chances to build skills and progress over time.

Pay and benefits

The base salary for the role is £29,432.

  • 25 days of annual leave when you start, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata.
  • 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays.
  • Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service.
  • Membership in the Civil Service pension scheme.
  • Season ticket loans.
  • Retail discounts.
  • Employee Assistance Programme.
  • Cycle to Work scheme.
