Job description
Role overview
His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is recruiting an Operational Support Grade for HMP Isle of Wight. This role is central to the smooth, safe, day-to-day running of a busy prison and offers a mix of desk-based duties and hands-on work.
What the job involves
You will work with a supportive team on a range of operational tasks, including security checks at the gate, searching, handling deliveries, supervising visitors, and keeping an eye on phone activity and CCTV. The role can also involve physical activity such as lifting, carrying, and walking to escort vehicles across the prison grounds.
Driving requirement
Driving is an essential part of this position at HMP Isle of Wight, so applicants must hold a full, valid UK driving licence.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are needed. The ideal candidate will communicate well, stay composed under pressure, use sound judgement, apply common sense, and work effectively as part of a team. Because the role is fast-paced and varied, it may suit someone looking to build a long-term career in the prison service.
Working pattern and environment
You should be prepared to work across different shift patterns, including evenings, weekends, and nights, to help maintain uninterrupted prison operations. Contact with prisoners is limited in this role, although some occasional interaction may occur depending on the prison setting.
Career development
This position offers a strong introduction to prison operations and can open up future opportunities within the service, including progression to other prison roles and the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.
Training and support
You will receive structured training and be supported with development opportunities and progression.
Pay and benefits
The salary for this role is £29,432. Alongside base pay, you will receive annual leave starting at 25 days on appointment and rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata. You will also get 9 bank, public and privilege holidays. Additional benefits include access to a paid Level 2 customer service apprenticeship, the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Additional information
This is a unique opportunity to contribute to public safety by supporting the important work carried out every day in prisons.
