Job description

Role overview

HMP Huntercombe is recruiting for an Operational Support Grade (OSG) to help keep the prison running safely and efficiently. This is a hands-on role where you will support everyday operations as part of a cooperative team, combining desk-based tasks with active duties around the establishment.

What the job involves

Your work may include carrying out security checks and searches at the gate, handling deliveries, overseeing visitors, and monitoring phone activity and CCTV. The role also involves some physical activity, such as lifting, carrying, and walking escort vehicles across the prison grounds.

Travel and attendance

This prison is in a rural area with limited public transport options. Having a driving licence and your own transport can be helpful, though it is not mandatory unless specifically stated. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so you must be able to travel to and from work punctually. Applicants should think carefully about the location and their transport arrangements before applying.

Driving licence requirement

Applicants must hold a full, valid UK driving licence that includes category D1. This permits driving vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer of up to 750 kg.

Who this role suits

No formal qualifications are needed. The job may suit someone who communicates well, stays calm when under pressure, uses sound judgement, and works effectively as part of a team. It is a fast-moving role that can be a starting point for a long-term career in the prison service.

Working pattern and career growth

OSGs work a range of shifts, including nights and weekends. While direct contact with prisoners is limited compared with prison officers, there may be occasional interaction depending on the establishment. The role builds valuable insight into prison operations and may open the door to other positions, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.

Training and benefits

You will receive training along with opportunities to develop and progress. In addition to base pay, the package includes annual leave, paid holidays, apprenticeship access, and Civil Service benefits.

Terms and conditions

  • Annual leave starts at 25 days on appointment and rises to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata.
  • You will also receive 9 days of bank, public, and privilege holidays.
  • There is access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service.
  • Additional benefits include the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.

Pay

The advertised salary is £29,432 per year.
