Job description
Role overview
This position is for an Operational Support Grade at HMP Huntercombe, where you will help keep daily prison operations running safely and efficiently. The work is active and varied, combining office-based tasks with hands-on duties such as carrying items, walking across the prison grounds to escort vehicles, and other physical activities.
What the job involves
- Supporting security checks and searches at the gate

- Overseeing visitors
- Monitoring CCTV and phone activity
- Assisting with the smooth day-to-day running of the prison
Working pattern and travel
The role involves a mix of shift types, including nights and weekends. Shift start and end times are fixed, so you must be able to reach the workplace punctually. The prison is in a rural location with limited public transport, so having a driving licence and your own transport is helpful, though not always mandatory unless specifically stated.
Licence requirement
Applicants must hold a full, valid UK driving licence with D1 entitlement, which permits driving vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer up to 750kg.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are needed. This role may suit someone who communicates well, stays composed in high-pressure situations, shows good judgement, uses common sense, and works well as part of a team.
Career development
This position can build strong knowledge of how prisons operate and may open doors to other prison careers, including the possibility of applying for the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.
Training and benefits
You will receive training and development support, along with the standard benefits package and opportunities for progression.
Additional pay and benefits
- Annual leave starts at 25 days on appointment and rises to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata

- Season ticket loans
- Retail discounts
- Employee Assistance Programme
- Cycle to Work scheme
