Job description
Role overview
HMP Full Sutton is hiring an Operational Support Grade to help keep a busy prison operating safely and efficiently. This is a practical, varied role that combines desk-based tasks with active duties around the prison.
What the role involves
You will support day-to-day prison operations by handling security checks at the gate, carrying out searches, overseeing deliveries, accompanying visitors, and monitoring phone activity and CCTV. The job also includes physical activity such as lifting, carrying, and walking escort routes across the prison site.
Working pattern and travel
This position follows fixed shift start and finish times, so punctual travel to and from the workplace is essential. The prison is in a rural area with limited public transport, so having a driving licence and your own vehicle may help, although it is not required unless specifically stated for the post. The role includes a range of shifts, including nights and weekends.
Who this opportunity suits
No formal qualifications are needed. This role is suited to someone who communicates clearly, stays calm in pressured situations, uses sound judgement, and works well as part of a team. It can be a strong entry point into a long-term career in prison services.
Career development
Although direct prisoner contact is limited, you may occasionally interact with prisoners depending on the establishment. The role offers a strong understanding of prison operations and may open the door to other prison careers, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.
Pay and benefits
The salary for this role is £29,432. You will also receive training, progression opportunities, and access to a wide package of benefits.
Additional benefits
- 25 days of annual leave on joining, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata
- 9 days of bank, public, and privilege holidays
- Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service
- Eligibility for the Civil Service pension scheme
- Season ticket loans
- Retail discounts
- Employee Assistance Programme
- Cycle to Work scheme
Hiring note
If you are interested in a hands-on role that supports public safety and prison operations, you are encouraged to apply.
