Job description
Role overview
HMP Guys Marsh is seeking an Operational Support Grade to help keep the prison running safely and efficiently each day. This is an active and varied position within a supportive team, combining office-based work with hands-on duties.
What the role involves
You will support a range of operational tasks, including security checks and searches at the gate, handling incoming deliveries, supervising visitors, and monitoring phone calls and CCTV. The job may also involve physical activity such as lifting, carrying, and walking escort routes across the prison grounds.
About the working environment
This is a fast-moving role where calm judgement, common sense, and teamwork are essential. The position helps ensure the prison continues to operate smoothly and safely. While direct contact with prisoners is limited compared with prison officers, some interaction may occur depending on the establishment.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are required. The role may suit someone who communicates well, stays composed under pressure, and works effectively with others. It can be a strong entry point into a career with the prison service.
Career development
The Operational Support Grade role builds practical knowledge of prison operations and may open the door to other prison roles in the future, including the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route. Training and development opportunities are provided.
Pay and benefits
The salary for this position is £29,432. Alongside base pay, the role includes annual leave of 25 days on appointment, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service on a pro-rata basis, plus 9 bank, public and privilege holidays. Additional support includes access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Working patterns
You should be prepared to work a range of shifts, including weekends and nights, to support continuous prison operations.
