Where you'll work
Job description
Role overview
This position is for an Operational Support Grade at HMP Huntercombe, where you will help keep a busy prison operating safely and efficiently. The role is varied and active, combining desk-based tasks with hands-on duties such as searches at the gate, handling deliveries, supervising visitors, checking phone calls and CCTV, and moving between escort vehicles and other areas across the prison site.
Working arrangements
This is a shift-based role that includes weekend and night working. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so you must be able to travel to work reliably and arrive on time. The site may be in a rural location with limited public transport, so having a driving licence and access to your own transport is helpful, though not always essential unless specifically required. Applicants must hold a full, valid UK driving licence with D1 entitlement, allowing the driving of vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer up to 750kg.
What the job involves
You will support the day-to-day running of the prison by carrying out security and operational support duties. The role is designed for someone who can stay calm, use good judgement, communicate well, and work effectively as part of a team in a fast-moving environment.
Career development
This role offers a strong introduction to prison operations and can lead to progression into other prison careers. It may also create a pathway to the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.
Pay and benefits
The salary for this role is £29,432. In addition to base pay, you will receive 25 days of annual leave on appointment, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service on a pro-rata basis, plus 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays. You will also have access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Additional information
There are no formal qualifications required for this role. The work suits someone who communicates clearly, remains composed under pressure, has sound common sense, and enjoys working as part of a supportive team. Contact with prisoners is limited, although occasional interaction may happen depending on the prison.
