Job description
Role overview
HMP Huntercombe is hiring an Operational Support Grade to help with the daily operation of a busy prison. This is an active, varied position where you will support a team across security, gate checks, visitor management, delivery handling, and monitoring activity through CCTV and phone controls.
What the job involves
The role combines desk-based responsibilities with hands-on work. You may need to lift and carry items, walk across the prison grounds, and escort vehicles. You will also help keep the establishment running safely and efficiently through routine support tasks.
Transport and shift requirements
Some prison sites are in rural areas with limited public transport, so having your own vehicle and a driving licence can be helpful, though it is not always compulsory unless a specific requirement is stated. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so you must be able to travel to work reliably and be on time. Please take the site location and your transport options into account before applying.
Driving licence requirement
Applicants must hold a full, valid UK driving licence with D1 entitlement. This category allows driving vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum length of 8 metres, and a trailer up to 750kg.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are required. The employer is looking for someone who communicates well, stays composed under pressure, uses common sense, shows good judgement, and works well as part of a team. The role suits someone who is comfortable in a fast-moving environment and open to shift work, including nights and weekends.
Career development
This role offers the chance to build real knowledge of prison operations and may create pathways into other prison-based roles, including the possibility of applying for the OSG to Prison Officer conversion route.
Pay and benefits
The salary for this role is £29,432. Alongside base pay, the package includes training, development opportunities, leave entitlement, public holiday entitlement, apprenticeship access, and a range of Civil Service benefits.
Additional benefits
- 25 days of annual leave on joining, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata where applicable
- 9 bank, public and privilege holidays
- Access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service
- Access to the Civil Service pension scheme
- Season ticket loans
- Retail discounts
- Employee Assistance Programme
- Cycle to Work scheme
