Job description
Role overview
At HMP Huntercombe, the Operational Support Grade plays an important part in keeping the prison operating safely and efficiently. The position is hands-on and varied, blending desk-based tasks with more active duties across the site.
What the role involves
You will help with security checks at the gate, manage incoming deliveries, oversee visitors, and observe phone activity and CCTV. The work can also include lifting, carrying, and walking across the prison grounds while escorting vehicles and supporting day-to-day operations.
Travel and attendance
Some prison sites are located in rural areas where public transport is limited, so having a driving licence and your own transport can be helpful, although this is not always mandatory unless specifically stated. Shift start and finish times are fixed, so you must be able to travel to work reliably and be on site on time.
Driving licence requirement
Applicants must hold a full, valid UK driving licence with D1 entitlement. This category allows driving vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats, a maximum vehicle length of 8 metres, and a trailer up to 750kg.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are needed. The job is well suited to someone who communicates clearly, stays composed in demanding situations, uses sound judgement, and works well as part of a team. It is a fast-moving role that can be a good entry point into a career within the prison service.
Working pattern and progression
The role includes a range of shifts, such as weekends and nights. Although contact with prisoners is limited compared with prison officers, there may be occasional interaction depending on the establishment. The role also provides practical insight into how prisons operate and may open up future progression routes, including the chance to apply for the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.
Training and development
You will receive training along with opportunities to grow and progress within the service.
Pay and benefits
The salary for this position is £29,432. In addition to base pay, the package includes annual leave starting at 25 days on appointment and rising to 30 days after 10 years of service, calculated pro rata, plus 9 days of bank, public and privilege holidays. You will also have access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
About the employer
His Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service is responsible for this prison support role, which contributes directly to the safe and effective running of the prison system.
