Job description
Role overview
HMP Erlestoke is looking for an Operational Support Grade (OSG) to help keep the prison running efficiently and safely. This is an active, varied position where you will be part of a team supporting day-to-day operations across the site.
What the job involves
The role includes a mix of desk-based and hands-on work. Typical duties can involve gate security and searches, handling incoming deliveries, supervising visitors, and keeping an eye on phone activity and CCTV. The work may also require lifting, carrying, and walking across the prison grounds to escort vehicles and support movement around the site.
Who this role suits
No formal qualifications are required. The ideal candidate is a clear communicator who stays composed in busy or pressurised situations. Good judgement, practical common sense, and a strong team approach are important for success in this role.
Working pattern and environment
This is a fast-moving prison support role that involves working a range of shifts, including weekends and night duties, to help maintain continuous operations.
Career development
This position offers a chance to build valuable experience in the prison system and gain insight into how a prison operates. It may open the door to other roles within the prison service, including the opportunity to apply for the OSG to Prison Officer conversion scheme.
Training and progression
You will receive training and have access to development opportunities to support your progression within the service.
Pay and benefits
The role offers a salary of £30,491. In addition to base pay, the package includes 25 days of annual leave on appointment, rising to 30 days after 10 years of service on a pro-rata basis, plus 9 bank, public and privilege holidays. You will also have access to a paid Level 2 apprenticeship in customer service, the Civil Service pension scheme, season ticket loans, retail discounts, an Employee Assistance Programme, and a Cycle to Work scheme.
Additional information
This is a unique opportunity to contribute to public safety by supporting important work carried out in prisons. While contact with prisoners is limited compared with prison officers, some occasional interaction may happen depending on the prison.
